ABSTRACT:This project idea started with an educational concept. No one will argue that a laser scanner is state of the art, and more accurate. But this project aim was to learn how to use simple components as low cost sensors, using the components and devices available in the market, and to build the scanner at the lowest cost possible.
2D Scanner is a contact scanner, in which a probe touches the outer dimension of the scanned object, consequently measuring its external dimensions.
The basic idea was to fix the scanned object on a rotating platform, measuring the outer surface. Then rotating the platform one step, using a stepper motor, measuring the outer dimension again, and repeating this step until, the whole outer dimension is scanned. This phase, would finish the scanning process. And the collected data is stored in the scanner memory. But it will not enable a visual representation of the scanned object. Which is normally expected.
To visualize the scanned object, a computer was used to draw the outer perimeter of the scanned object. To achieve that, the stored data is transferred to the computer usingRS232 connection, then the computer has to calculate the errors due to the measurement process, then, the X and Y of each point. Finally, to draw and connect all the points.
